This is useful especially when you are decommissioning the databases.<\/p>\n<p>Remember &#8211; leaving out deleting the backups from both the rman catalog and\u00a0media library catalog, may lead to orphaned backups on your backup server.<\/p>\n<p>If this is TSM, then this is the case for sure. One needs to delete backups while being conected to the TSM to allow\u00a0TSM to mark the backup files as deleted. The TSM gets\u00a0rid physically of the backup pieces during the maintenance routines.<\/p>\n<p>There are two cases\u00a0you can encounter. The first one is when you still have controlfile of that database available &#8211; this is quite simple. The second one &#8211; when you have no controlfiles left &#8211; more complicated but you still can do it \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nIF YOU STILL HAVE A CONTROLFILE<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Startup mount using your controlfile &#8211; as usual\n<pre escaped=\"true\" lang=\"php\" line=\"1\" class=\"\">SQL> startup mount;<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Connect rman\u00a0to the instance as a target and to the catalog\n<pre escaped=\"true\" lang=\"php\" line=\"1\" class=\"\"># rman target \/ catalog rman\/****@RMAN<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Check if you are playing with\u00a0the catalog of the right database, list backups etc.\n<pre escaped=\"true\" lang=\"php\" line=\"1\" class=\"\">RMAN> list backup of datafile 1;<\/pre>\n<p>Examine the output to confirm that you have the correct dbid and that the backups belong to the right database.<\/li>\n<p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Delete all backupsBefore you confirm that the removal process should proceed, make sure\u00a0if RMAN has properly allocated the tape channel &#8211; this is crucial.\n<pre escaped=\"true\" lang=\"php\" line=\"1\" class=\"\">RMAN> allocate CHANNEL FOR MAINTENANCE DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE';\r\nRMAN> delete backup;<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Unregister database from the RMAN catalog\n<pre escaped=\"true\" lang=\"php\" line=\"1\" class=\"\">RMAN> unregister database;<\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>IF YOU NO LONGER POSSES EVEN A SINGLE CONTROLFILE<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If you have an old spfile you can use it or if not &#8211; you can create a basic init.ora file for the deleted database. Remember to include db_name parameter with a proper database name. All you need is :<strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">initDB_NAME.ora<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<pre escaped=\"true\" lang=\"php\" line=\"1\" class=\"\">db_name=MYDB\r\nsga_target=1500M<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Find the proper DBID of the database<br \/>\n&#8211; by RMAN command \u2013 'list incarnation&#8217;<br \/>\n&#8211; in the\u00a0catalog view 'rc_database&#8217;<br \/>\n&#8211; in\u00a0the\u00a0old backup logs \u2013 when connecting to a target, RMAN prints its DBID<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Startup nomount using prepared parameter file or your old spfile\n<pre escaped=\"true\" lang=\"php\" line=\"1\" class=\"\">SQL> startup nomount;<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Connect with RMAN to the newly started instance as target and to the catalog\n<pre escaped=\"true\" lang=\"php\" line=\"1\" class=\"\">rman target \/ catalog rman\/****@RMAN<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Set the dbid to the correct dbid retrieved at point 2\n<pre escaped=\"true\" lang=\"php\" line=\"1\" class=\"\">RMAN> set dbid 97794349576;<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Check if you are playing with the\u00a0right database\u2019s catalog, list backups etc.\n<pre escaped=\"true\" lang=\"php\" line=\"1\" class=\"\">RMAN> list backup of datafile 1;<\/pre>\n<p>Examine the output to confirm that you have the correct dbid and that the backups belong to the right database.\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Delete all backups of the databaseBefore you confirm that the removal process should proceed, make sure\u00a0if RMAN has properly allocated the tape channel &#8211; this is crucial.\n<pre escaped=\"true\" lang=\"php\" line=\"1\" class=\"\">RMAN> allocate CHANNEL FOR MAINTENANCE DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE';\r\nRMAN> delete backup;<\/pre>\n<li>Unregister database from the RMAN catalog\n<pre escaped=\"true\" lang=\"php\" line=\"1\" class=\"\">RMAN> unregister database;<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Remember to get rid of all the stuff that has been\u00a0left on the disk and is not being used anymore (spfiles, init.ora files, password files, admin directories etc.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\"><strong>That&#8217;s all folks!!
